NINE HISTORICAL PLACES TO VISIT IN JERUSALEM

Jerusalem is an ancient as well one of the holiest city of the world. It has places of significance and worship of  Jews, Christians and Muslims. It is a must place of visit for every traveller having interest in historical heritage.

WESTERN WALL

Wailing wall holds high reverence for Jews.  There used to exist grand temple of Jews at this place. Temple was destroyed by Romans and now only a wall of the temple exist. It is also called wailing wall as Jews express their grief for its destruction.

DOME OF ROCK

Dome of Rock is a sacred place for Muslims. It is believed that Prophet Mohammed ascended to heaven from this rock.

AL-AQSA MOSQUE

The Al-Aqsa mosque is third of the holiest mosque for Muslims. It has been built in seventh century AD. It is located on Temple Mount.

VIA DOLOROSA

The via dolorosa is the route through which Jesus Christ was taken for crucifixion. It covers a distance of around 600 meters between Antonia Fortress ( the place of confinement of Jesus Christ)  and Holy Sepulchre ( the place of crucifixion of Jesus Christ).  It contains 14 stations of cross.

CHURCH OF HOLY SEPULCHRE

Church of Holy Sepulchre has been built at the place where Jesus Christ was crucified. It is one the most  holiest church for Christians. It was built by Constantine in 4th Century.

MOUNT OF OLIVES

It is believed that the Jesus Christ ascended to heaven from this place. The name mount of olives have been given as once olive trees were found there in abundance.

TOWER OF DAVID

Tower of David is an ancient fort. It was rebuilt during ottoman rule. It has been converted into museum.

DAMACUS GATE

Damcus Gate is one of the main gates of old city of Jerusalem. The gate has existed from Roman times but in its current form it has been constructed by Suleiman the Magnificent.

CARDO

Cardo is remnants of city street from the times of Roman Rule. Cardo has been created after destruction of  Second Temple of Jews around first 70 CE. Cardo was further extended during rule of Justinian. It is located in jewish quarters and an important tourist attraction.
