NINE HISTORICAL PLACES TO VISIT IN GREECE

Athens is a must place to visit for historical buffs. Athens is capital of Greece and an ancient city. Greek civilization has reached to its zenith before even  before birth of Jesus Christ. Great philosophers like Socrates, Pluto and Aristotle lived in Greece.

ACROPOLIS

Acropolis is located on a citadel in Greece. Remains  of several ancient buildings including Parthenon, Propylaea,  Temple of Athena located there.  These structures had been built around 500 BC.

PARTHENON

Parthenon is a temple located on Acropolis. It is dedicated to Goddess Athena. This structure is a zenith of Greek Art. Although built in 5th century, its ruins can still be seen.

TEMPLE OF ATHENA NIKE

Temple of Athena and Nike is also located on Acropolis. It is dedicated to goddesses Athena and Nike. It has been built around 420 BC.

TEMPLE OF OLYMPEAN ZEUS

It was a  huge temple having 104 columns dedicated to Zeus. It was built during 600- 200 BC. Its remains could still be seen.

ANCIENT AGORA

Agora was public spaces in city states of the Greece. Agora is located in the north-west of Acropolis.

ODEON

The Odeon of Athens  was built by Pericles in around 435 BC. It was used for musical contests. It is located on south eastern foot of Acropolis.

THEATRE OF DIONYSUS

The Theater of Dionysus is an ancient theatre built on the south slope of Acropolis. It has the capacity to contain 25000 persons.

PANATHENAIC STADIUM

Panathenaic Stadium is an ancient stadium in Athens made of marble. It was built in 400 BC. In 144 AD it was rebuilt in marble. It was having capacity of 50,000 seats. It had been abandoned and excavated in 1869. It hosted opening and closing ceremony of first Olympic in 1896.

ACROPOLIS MUSEUM

Acropolis Museum is located at the foot of the Acropolis and houses several artifacts and sculptures.
