NINE HISTORICAL PLACES TO VISIT IN BERLIN

Berlin is the largest city of Germany.  Berlin became capital of Germany in 1871 and continue to be so. After the Second World war Germany was divided in West Germany and East Germany. East Germany constructed wall in Berlin in 1961 which divided the city. Berlin wall fell in 1989. and subsequently Germany was unified.

BRANDENBURG GATE

Brandenburg Gate is an eighteenth century monument built during 1788 to 1791 during reign of Willian Frederik II. It has been designed by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans. The bronze sculpture in the gate was designed by Johann Gottfried Schadow. Roman impact could be seen on the gate. It has been witness to several historic events.

REICHSTAG

Reichstag is the main administrative  building in Germany. It was built between 1884 to 1894. The building was designed by Paul Wallot. It was damaged during second world war and was restored. Subsequently it was used for exhibitions and special events. During reconstruction a glass dome has been built which is a major tourist attraction.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL

Holocaust Memorial has been built in memory jewish victims who hadlost their life during regime of Adolf Hitler. It was designed by Architect Peter Eisenman and Buro Happold. It was inaugurated in 2005.

BERLIN CATHEDRAL

Berlin Cathedral in the present form was  built during 1894 to 1905. This church has long history and had been in existence since 15th Century.

CHARLOTTENBURG PALACE

It is a seventh century palace built in Baroque and Rococo styles. It was constructed by Sophie Charlotte, wife of Frederik III, Elector of Brandenburg.

KAISER WILHEM MEMORIAL CHURCH

Kaiser Wilhem Memorial Church has been built in 1890. It was badly damaged during bombing in Second World War. It has not renovated and left, as it was, as a memory of Second World War.

TOPOGRAPHY OF TERROR

 Topography of Terror is a history museum in Berlin mainly showing terrors of the Nazi Germany. It is located on the site where once Gestapo building had existed. It has been designed by Peter Zumthor.

CHECKPOINT CHARLIE

Checkpoint Charlie was main  crossing in the Berlin Wall  between West Germany and East Germany.  After fall of Berlin Wall and unification of Berlin, it has became a major tourist attraction.
